Holistic approaches to the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders among call-center workers
The approach to the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in call centers has primarily focused on specific postures and work practices. The postures are generally static erect or reclined in nature, and the work practices include rest breaks and stretching exercises. From observations of call-center operators undertaking their duties, it is evident that a wide range of postures is used and a broader range of strategies is required to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. They include a recognition of the relationship between cognitive workload demands and psychosocial and social stressors on the development of musculoskeletal symptoms. A holistic approach is required to prevent musculoskeletal disorders that embraces each causal factor and their interrelationships.
